Comparison
MockAPI vs WireMock
WireMock is a powerful open-source tool for stubbing HTTP APIs, especially inside JVM test suites. MockAPI is a hosted platform where mocks are generated from data models and shared by your whole team at a stable URL. Many teams use both: WireMock inside unit tests, MockAPI for everything that needs a live, shared API.
At a glance
| Capability | MockAPI | WireMock |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Sign up and get a hosted URL | Run it yourself (JAR, Docker, test library) or use WireMock Cloud |
| How mocks are defined | Data models + endpoints in a UI, by import, or by an AI agent | JSON stub mappings or code (Java DSL) |
| Realistic generated data | 140+ data types, 60+ locales, model relationships | Response templating helpers; data is mostly hand-written |
| Stateful behaviour | CRUD persistence out of the box | Scenario state machines you configure |
| Fault & latency injection | Latency profiles, rate limits, named failure scenarios | Fixed/random delays, malformed responses, connection faults |
| Record & playback | Not the focus | Yes, a core strength |
| GraphQL | Schema-based GraphQL mocks | Via community extension |
| Team sharing & roles | Projects, roles, organizations, SSO | Self-managed (Cloud adds collaboration) |
| AI agents (MCP) | Built-in MCP server | Not built in |
| Licence | SaaS with a free forever plan | Open source (Cloud is paid) |

Choose WireMock if…
- You need in-process HTTP stubs inside JUnit or other JVM test suites.
- You rely on record-and-playback of real traffic or very advanced request matching.
- You must run everything on your own infrastructure with an open-source licence.
Choose MockAPI if…
- You want a live mock that your frontend, mobile apps, QA and stakeholders can all call, without running servers.
- You prefer generating realistic data from models over maintaining stub files.
- You need CRUD state, GraphQL and scenario switching without writing state machines.
- You want AI agents to create and update mocks for you over MCP.
What is WireMock?
WireMock is an open-source (Apache 2.0) HTTP mock server that runs as a library, a standalone process or a Docker container. It offers advanced request matching, response templating, fault injection, record and playback, and stateful “scenarios”. WireMock Cloud is the commercial hosted offering.
Stub files vs. models
In WireMock, each stub is a request matcher plus a response. That precision is great for tests that assert on exact payloads, but it means data has to be written and maintained by hand.
MockAPI models your resources once. Endpoints that return a User, a list of Orders or a nested Company are generated from those models, so changing a field updates every response that uses it.
Hosting and sharing
Running WireMock for a team means deciding where it lives, who updates mappings and how they get deployed. MockAPI is hosted: every project has an HTTPS base URL with API-key authentication and CORS enabled, so it works from localhost, CI, simulators and real devices with no tunnels.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use MockAPI and WireMock together?
Yes. A common setup is WireMock for in-process unit/integration tests and MockAPI for shared environments: frontend development, demos, QA and AI agents.
Does MockAPI support stateful mocks like WireMock scenarios?
MockAPI’s stateful mode persists real records across requests (POST, GET, PUT/PATCH, DELETE) without configuring state transitions. Named scenarios are used to switch whole response behaviours, such as an outage or an expired token.
Can I import an OpenAPI spec?
Yes. Import OpenAPI 3.x or Swagger 2.0 and MockAPI creates models and endpoints, then generates responses from them.
