Collaboration

Invite team members, assign roles and permissions, and collaborate on mock API projects together.

Team Collaboration

MockAPI supports team collaboration with role-based access control (RBAC). You can invite team members to specific projects, assign them roles, and control exactly what they can do with granular permissions.

Plan Requirement

Team collaboration features require the Developer plan or higher. Free plan accounts are limited to 1 member (the project owner). See Plans & Billing for details.

Inviting Team Members

To invite team members, navigate to Settings → Team and click "Invite Members".

  • Enter one or more email addresses
  • Select a role for the invited members
  • Optionally add a personal message
  • Click "Send Invitations"

Invitations are sent via email. Recipients must have a MockAPI account (or create one) and accept the invitation to join the project.

Managing invitations

From the Team settings page, you can:

  • View pending invitations: See all outstanding invitations and their status
  • Resend invitations: Resend the invitation email if the recipient hasn't received it
  • Cancel invitations: Revoke a pending invitation before it's accepted

Roles

Roles define what actions team members can perform within a project. MockAPI includes four built-in system roles, and paid plans can create custom roles.

System roles

RoleDescriptionKey Capabilities
Super AdminFull control over the projectAll permissions, cannot be edited or deleted
AdminAdministrative accessManage team, roles, settings, and all resources
EditorCreate and edit resourcesCreate, edit, and delete models, endpoints, and schemas
ViewerRead-only accessView models, endpoints, and schemas but cannot modify them

Note

System roles cannot be deleted. However, you can customize their permissions on paid plans. The Super Admin role always has all permissions and cannot be modified.

Custom roles

Create custom roles tailored to your team's needs from Settings → Roles & Permissions. Custom roles let you combine permissions from different categories to create the exact access level you need.

  • Navigate to Settings → Roles & Permissions
  • Click "Create Role"
  • Enter a name and description for the role
  • Select the permissions you want to grant
  • Save the role

Permissions

Permissions control access to specific actions within a project. They are organized into categories that correspond to different areas of the application.

Permission categories

CategoryPermissionsDescription
Projectsproject-view, project-edit, project-delete, project-settingsView, modify, delete projects and manage settings
Modelsmodel-create, model-view, model-edit, model-deleteCreate, view, edit, and delete data models
Endpointsendpoint-create, endpoint-view, endpoint-edit, endpoint-deleteCreate, view, edit, and delete REST endpoints
GraphQL Schemasgraphql-schema-create/view/edit/deleteManage GraphQL schemas
GraphQL Endpointsgraphql-endpoint-create/view/edit/deleteManage GraphQL endpoints
Teamteam-view, team-invite, team-manage-roles, team-removeView team, invite members, manage roles, remove members
API Keysapi-key-generate, api-key-view, api-key-revokeGenerate, view, and revoke API keys
Rolesrole-view, role-create, role-edit, role-deleteManage custom roles

Implicit permissions

Some permissions implicitly grant other permissions. For example, the model-edit permission automatically includes model-view, because you can't edit what you can't see. This reduces the need to manually select dependent permissions when configuring roles.

Managing Team Members

Assigning roles

From Settings → Team, you can change a team member's role by selecting a different role from the dropdown next to their name. Role changes take effect immediately.

Removing members

To remove a team member from a project, click the remove button next to their name on the Team settings page. The member will immediately lose access to the project but their MockAPI account remains intact.

Accepting Invitations

When you receive a project invitation, you can accept it from the notifications page or by clicking the link in the invitation email. Once accepted, the project appears in your project selector and you have access based on the assigned role.

Best Practices

  • Use the principle of least privilege: Assign the minimum role needed for each team member's responsibilities.
  • Create custom roles: Instead of over-granting with a higher system role, create custom roles that match your team's needs exactly.
  • Limit Super Admin access: Only project owners and trusted administrators should have the Super Admin role.
  • Use Viewer for stakeholders: Give non-technical team members or stakeholders the Viewer role so they can see the API design without risk of changes.
